Key Verse: “She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: ‘You are the God who sees me,’ for she said, ‘I have now seen the One who sees me.” – Genesis 16:13
El Roi, meaning “The God Who Sees Me,” is a profound name for God revealed in the context of Hagar’s distress. As a servant of Sarah, Hagar encountered great hardship and mistreatment, leading her to flee. In her moment of greatest desperation, God met Hagar by a spring in the desert. His appearance and words brought comfort and direction, affirming His awareness of her suffering and His care for her circumstances.
This encounter highlights God’s character as El Roi, showing that He is not distant or detached but intimately aware of and involved in the struggles of His people.
Understanding El Roi: God’s Omnipresence: God is everywhere and sees everything—nothing escapes His notice. God’s Compassion: He cares deeply about our afflictions and steps into our lives with comfort and help. God’s Provision: He provides guidance and makes promises based on His knowledge of our past, present, and future needs.
Reflecting on El Roi’s Presence: In Prayer: Approach God with the confidence that He sees you and knows your needs even before you speak. In Trials: Remember that you are never hidden from God’s sight, no matter how isolated you feel. In Service: Serve others with the knowledge that God sees your actions and intentions, and He values them.
How to Live in the Light of El Roi: Trust Fully: Knowing God sees us helps us trust Him more fully with every part of our lives. Walk Confidently: We can move forward in life with confidence, knowing that God is aware of our paths and is guiding our steps. Share Compassionately: Reflect God’s compassionate nature by being attentive to the struggles of others, offering help and understanding.
Embracing the truth that God is El Roi empowers believers to live with greater faith, security, and commitment to follow His lead.

- Lord El Roi, thank You for being the God Who Sees. We are comforted to know that no part of our lives is hidden from Your compassionate gaze. Let us extend the same awareness and compassion to those around us, reflecting Your love and mercy. We are grateful that You are with us in every moment in Jesus’ name, Amen.
